the first wearable camera that can fly

Posted by Unknown at 11:44 am 0 Comments

Drones are everywhere at CES 2015, including various mentions and demos through the opening day keynote by Intel CEO Brian Krzanich. And of these, that one that has captured everyone’s attention came at the end of the Intel presentation, when Krzanich brought out Christoph Kohstall and Jelena Jovanovic, the winners of the recent Intel “Make it Wearable” challenge, to have them demonstrate their Edison-powered Nixie wearable drone.

Its first public demonstration did not disappoint. Kohstall, sporting Nixie on his wrist like a bionic wristwatch, snapped the device off his arm and explained that it has no controller, but rather flies away with a toss, pauses to snap a photo, and then returns to the sender to be caught.

A physicist from California has invented the internet's dream camera, a drone which you wear as a watch that’ll fly away and snap selfies on command before returning to you. The Nixie is still in early development, but has recently received a huge boost by winning $500,000 in Intel’s Make It Wearable competition.

Stridalyzer - Quantify your Run

Posted by Unknown at 9:00 am 0 Comments
We've been following Stridalyzer – a pair of connected insoles for runners – since the product was unveiled back in September, and have to say it's one of our favourite Kickstarter projects of the year.
The idea came from a pair of injured runners hailing from India, who wanted to improve the way they ran. ReTiSense – the company behind Stridalyzer – claims that 60% - 70% of runners will suffer an injury and 40% of those will include the dreaded 'runner's knee'. That's the problem Stridalyzer is trying to solve.

The connected insoles feature a host of pressure sensors, which monitor your footfalls, looking for imbalances, over-pronation and stresses on your limbs, which can lead to serious injury. The app live tracks your run, offering feedback if it notices serious problems with your form and offers a "form score" after every training session.
Runner's form will deteriorate as fatigue kicks in and Stridalyzer will also help long distance runners stay aware of how their bodies react to tiredness, which can focus gym sessions away from the track.
Away from your technique, Stridalyzer will also help optimise cadence and ground contact time, which can yield improvements in speed and time, too.
As injured runners here at Wareable we feel there's real value in this project, but a lot will depend on the quality of the hardware and how much analysis is offered through the app. As we've seen, showing the data is one thing but helping people act on it is quite another.
ReTiSense is looking for $25,000 of funding before 7 January. A pair of smart insoles will set you back $90.

Features:
Activity:
Track your vitals - Pace, Distance, Time, Stride Length, Stride Rate, Ground Contact Time and Battery – all on one screen!

Stress Map

Samsung creates Safety Truck

Posted by Unknown at 9:17 pm 0 Comments
When driving behind big semi-trailers, people regularly take risks overtaking them because they often have to first move out from behind the truck to see if the road ahead is clear before passing. This is particularly dangerous on single-lane highways because such a maneuver can mean driving into the path of oncoming traffic. Now Samsung Electronics has come up with a way to help reduce this problem by mounting cameras on the front of a truck and large screens on the rear to display to following drivers a clear view of the road ahead.

Like the See-Through System we wrote about in 2013, the prototype video system on "Safety Truck" comprises a front-mounted camera to capture view of the road ahead of the truck. Rather than wirelessly send a live feed to a transparent LCD screen installed in a trailing driver's car, Samsung's solution transmits a continuous view of the road in front of the truck to exterior monitors mounted on the rear.
This view is enabled both day and night, and is said to have the potential to significantly reduce overtaking accidents, as well as providing trailing drivers with information on road hazards ahead well in time for them to react.
After extensive tests of the prototype in Argentina, Samsung says that the test vehicle is no longer operational but believes that the the technology has been proven to work. As such, there are plans to carry out further tests that will have the technology comply with the appropriate road authorities for use on the highways. In this regard, Samsung is working with NGOs and government to see this through.

No announcement has been made as to when – or if – such a system will be made commercially available or at what cost.
